چکیده

In this issue of the Journal, Essebag et al. (4) examine data from the BRUISE CONTROL (BRidge or continUe coumadIn for device SurgEry randomized CONTROLled trial extended follow-up for INFECTION) trial connecting 2 of the more frequent complications of CIED procedures. Study strengths include strict definitions of both clinically significant hematoma (CSH) and significant infections, and the follow-up period of 1 year. The infection rate in this study was 2.4%, greater than described in other recent series (1,5–9). All infections required hospitalization and were treated with parenteral antibiotics and complete system removal. Infection rates differed significantly according to whether patients had a CSH or not; infection rates were 11% in patients with CSH, versus 1.5% in those without. The only factor found in multivariate analysis to be associated with

Influence of early-season nitrogen application pattern on impact sensitivity in Russet Burbank potato tubers

As part of an effort to assess the influence of cultural practices on bruising in potato tubers, this work was a preliminary study to determine whether the pattern of early-season nitrogen fertilizer application influences impact sensitivity (bruise threshold and bruise resistance) in Russet Burbank tubers. Tissue sample impact failure stress, strain, and shock wave speed, and whole-tuber bruis...

Rabbit model of subchondral bone bruise and the treatment potential of calcitonin.

BACKGROUND This study characterized a novel rabbit model of subchondral bone bruise and investigated the intervening effect of calcitonin. METHODS Bone bruise was implemented via controlled free-fall counterpoise on the medial tibial subchondral bone of 5-month-old New Zealand rabbits, with 3, 2.5, or 2 Joules of energy. Subsequent subchondral bone bruise was characterized via magnetic resona...

Enhancing Tuber Calcium Concentration May Reduce Incidence of Blackspot Bruise Injury in Potatoes

Our previous research has provided evidence that in-season calcium applications can increase tuber calcium and improve tuber quality with reduced internal defects. To determine if increasing the tuber calcium concentration also mitigates tuber bruise incidence, five commercially relevant potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars ( Russet Burbank , Atlantic , Snowden , Superior , and Dark Red Norl...
